I am still doing monotypes at Don's studio. I finished
this one today. It was fun to do, I just played and it
worked. Of course it has no more story telling quality
than any other abstract I have done. Oh well.

I am having a heck of a time getting photos of these
prints. For one the whites of the paper are not coming
across white and for some reason I don't feel they are
as sharp as I'd like them to be. The other issue is the
color of ink is more subtle than it shows here.
I am not going to come unraveled about it though. I
won't be posting them on my website until I get decent
photos, but I want to get them on the blog.

After many months of not creating I was beginning to
wonder if I was an artist anymore. I have had many good
reasons for not being creative, building a bedroom one
of the biggest. My friend and fellow artist, Don Gray asked
me over to his beautiful studio to do monotypes. I believe
he was doing an art 'intervention'. Get this artist creating!

I have not worked with monotypes very much so I am
fumbling my way along. With each monotype I learn more
and get more comfortable with the medium. The approach
is completely different from working with any medium I am
familiar with. Also the creative process is one step removed.
Not only is the art created on a piece of glass and pressed
onto paper, the resulting image is a mirror image of what is
placed on the glass. And then I never know what the ink is
going to do. I like the process as it forces me into the space
of letting go of control, my favorite creative stance.

I am also fumbling along because there is a birth of abstracted
storytelling that I want to express in my my art and I have
no idea how to go about it. This series is helping me find that
expression.

and totally related to what he experienced and how he thinks.

thinker, Jerry is also an incredible photographer.

During the writing of this book the working title was always
'The Present'. At one point Jerry was planning to self publish
and proceeded as if this would be his course of action and the
result would be a physical book. Then he had the epiphany,
'The Present' would be just that, a present, a gift from him to us.

Guardino Show

I have just returned from Portland and my opening at Guardino Gallery.
It was a raging success as far as openings go. Hundreds of people came
and everyone showing sold a piece. Bouquets were delivered and friends
from the internet met for the first time. I saw someone from high school
and met a collector for the first time (you know who you are!). Maria
Wickwire, sculptress for the show was a delight to meet. Donna and her
daughter in law held down the fort with true grace! I had a blast.
It would have been perfect if I hadn't been physically challenged and blew
up like the Michelin man...doing nothing great for my ego. Ah well!

I started the event by meeting up with the extraordinarily interesting
Richard Speer, art critic, and someone I feel fortunate to call a friend,
for lunch. I also had the pleasure of meeting and lunching with artist
Dorothy Goode, Richard's woman friend. We started out a little rocky
as she arrived first, and recognizing her from photos I introduced myself
by saying "You must be Martha?" ...well...since her name is Dorothy
and unbeknownst to me Richards ex is Martha she gave me a very strange
look. We worked it out and she thought I should call her 'babe', which I did,
in fact, for the duration of our lunch. I had a wonderful time and Richard
enjoyed the show. His review can be read here:

Finally! I have worked and reworked and let this painting
set so I could figure out what the heck to do with it. It is
finished. It has been two other paintings, Midnight Rambler
and Painted Pony. This is it final incarnation as it is now
one of my faves of the new work. But what a process!!!
Hope you enjoy. The reds are deeper but I played with it
on Photoshop and couldn't get the deep beauty of Alizarin
Crimson. Oh well.

Well what do you know, another painting? She's on a roll
folks. I wish I actually felt that way. I feel a little like I am
slogging through mud and I am not certain that paintings
are done. Anyhow here is a redo of an older painting and I
do feel much better about it than I did the original.

Midnight Rambler

The weather forecast for this area last Sunday was
so bad it was laughable. We had three storms headed
our way, very strong winds as you can imagine with
such a convergence, warming temperatures with tons
of rain causing flooding because at that time there was
quite a bit of snow on the mountains and down here in
the valley. The wind came, the warm came, along with
that the melt came, a little rain sprinkled down on us.
The storms never came. I don't know about the flooding,
I imagine the creeks are roaring. All in all it has been a
bit anti-climactic.

To make up for it I have been painting up a storm. I think
this piece is done. I am almost finished with another piece.

Painting puts me through so many changes. It is so difficult
staying with theprocess, enjoying it and believing a piece of
art will emerge, and I will know when it is a painting. So
much of painting abstractly is about being lost and the
painting is lost until it is found and then it is finished or
pretty close to being finished.

You'll be hearing more from me as I prepare for my show
in Portland, Oregon, at Guardino's on Alberta St.. I believe
the opening is March 31st.

Guess who???? Yep it's me, having gone through another
alchemical void, I return, hopefully the better for having
gone through it. I have been in a struggle of birthing
something new. Not in terms of style, but of consistency.
After painting "Innerspace", I felt really happy with what
I had created, but I knew creating something that was as
satisfactory to me would be very difficult, but I wanted to
try. I like the results, but don't know about maintaining it.
It is forcing me to push harder and that is a good thing.
I feel my limits at times as I go up to the edge of my
understanding.

Any way enough said. Here is the painting. It is a rework
of an older painting I was never completely satisfied with.

Times Square

As I sit at the computer this morning it is 0 degrees F or -18 C.
We usually have a cold snap like this once or twice a winter and
thank goodness it does not last long. The high today is supposed
to be 7 F, with a wind chill factor brrrrr. Last night I woke up feeling
a little short on oxygen and Kirby was already awake coughing.
Does something happen to the air when it gets this cold? It's very
dry I am thirsty all the time. You must understand I grew up in a
temperate environment where right now they are all complaining
because it is down in the 30's.

The good news is I am spending my time in the studio. Yesterday
I rearranged the studio and finished a painting. Fun!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving all of you here in the USA. I am very
thank-full this year. Thank you for following my art and being in my life.

Oh, by the way, I think this painting is done.

Well finally I am back at it in full speed in the studio with 2 paintings
going at the same time. I have the darndest time being consistent in
my style! That is what galleries want, a consistent show, in style, that
is. Do any of you artists out there have the same issue? I mean artists
are supposed to be creative right? Oh, don't listen to me, in some
ways I supposed it's good for me as it pushes me to keep going, keep
working the painting until it works with the rest in some way.

I am in the process of going back and looking at paintings I have hanging
around the house and asking if I love the painting and if I don't I am going
back in and reworking it. That is what I am doing with this work in process.
I felt it was the weakest piece in my Satellite Gallery show so now it is
completely changed and already I like it better even though it has a ways to
go.

Finally I have gone back into the studio. It was easy when it was raining last week
but it was sunny and perfect for election day. With winter on its way the studio holds
very little appeal on sunny days. I did finish a painting though.

Carol Wiebe of the blog Silver Spring Studio did a fabulous feature on me.
It was a total surprise. You never know what you are going to find when you open
your email. Check out her blog but also go to her website and look at her lovely art,
she makes cracked paper quilts (which I know nothing about, but find intriguing).

I am now in the process of getting the garden and the house ready for winter.
Then I will kick into gear for my show in Portland in April. I do have a piece
on the wall waiting for attention right now. I think it is 24 x 36.

I just finished my first interview. Richard Speer the art critic in Portland tried
but I was closed mouth with him. He called me enigmatic. I consider Richard a
friend so I would probably give him one now. This one was written, which made

My friend Cindy Bilotti sent this quote to me this morning and I love it! It states
perfectly my relationship to paint!

A couple of months ago I submitted to Guardino Gallery's call for artists for 2011.
Yesterday I received the news that I will be showing for the month of April with
sculptural artist Maria Wickwire. I am excited. I showed at this gallery many
years ago, a showing of my drawings. I really like the the gallery, the location
(Alberta St. in Portland), and the gallery owner, Donna Guardino. I have never
seen Maria's work in person but went to her site and saw her beautiful work.
The other part of this that excites me is the fact that I have a deadline and have
to paint. Deadlines are a real motivator for me. Pathetic how difficult it is for me to
get to the studio otherwise! I posted Deep Sea Diving as I walked into the gallery
with a few paintings and I believe this is the one that sold here

On another front I have finally finished the brochure I have been working on for
my other profession and it is published on line at www.scribd.com/katherine_treffinger.

Wow, two days in a row. What's going on here? I have
been struggling with this piece for a while now. I think
it is finished. Feel free to tell me what you think. Getting
away from the studio and going to Portland and getting
my brains image bank refueled helped a lot in allowing
me to breakthrough with it. I need to get away more
often.

This piece was a paint over on an old painting of Cindy's
and my collaboration. Part of the reason I had such a
difficult time with it was letting go of the parts of the old
painting that were 'precious', always a challenge.

Ron, The Witness II and Gail

I have been taking a break from the time I spend on the computer.
This has meant a break from blogging, as that is where the time
really gets gobbled up. I have recently returned from a trip to Portland.
Coming from a county with a population of 25,000 to the city is an
awesome assault of the senses. It was so inspiring to be around all
the creative energy in that city. I went out to eat, visited galleries and
storefronts, bought art supplies, and delivered 14 pieces to a beautiful
furniture store. I house sat so I had my time all my own. It was so
peaceful to be solo for a time. I had incredible dreams, waking up
wanting to create art.

For those of you in the Portland area the art is at Parker Furniture, a
few blocks east on 10 from 217. At one time I showed at Roche Bobois
(furniture store) and did very well. Since then I have wanted to find
another opportunity like that. The opportunity arose with one of the
lovely women I worked with at Roche Bobois offering to represent
me at Parker. Furniture stores are not gallery representation but they
are a great venue as people can see the art in context of a mock living
space. Also I will be showing until we decide to end the arrangement,
not once every 2 years.

The commission has been hung in its new home and Ron and Gail are
very happy with it. They sent me the attached photo. They look like ol'
friends the three of them!

The Witness II

Yesterday was the big day with my commission. I received a very enthusiastic
final approval on the piece and now it is just a matter of the painting drying and
it will be on the way to Seattle. It is a strange thing doing a commission, wondering
if the client will love the painting. Really you don't want anything less. And this
was a large painting!

I am still trying to come up with a name on the abstract. It is usually much easier,
but for some reason this one is not as simple. I think it is because the associations
I am having are much deeper than is usual.

"What meaning does doing art have for you?"

I believe that art is giving meaning to my life, allowing me to be me
and thus making life worthwhile for me. It’s about capturing what is
beauty, in my eyes, and celebrating it. Passing it on.

I have a fascination with the phenomenon of nature, I want to
explore it.

The series of paintings “Cocktails at the Pond” is a good example
about where the fascination with an aspect of nature can lead to.
The inspiration for these works can be found on and around the
edge of water, kissing the earth or land and can be big or small.
When approaching bodies of water, enclosed or vast, set into the
land or mighty rivers on their way to oceans and seas. It is there
that it happens .. the magic. They can morph into mirrors reflecting
the skies, or gaps making interruptions in the landscape. They look
like mysterious portals, doorways to undiscovered worlds.

I am the first one to see it as it is at that very moment. A nano
second later it has changed already. Maybe a ripple from the wind,
the evaporation of a drop of water, a fleck of dust has landed on the
surface, specks of light found a new rhythm , a different dance. The
surrounding air changes the mood of the body of water, a bird flies
across and paints a disappearing shadow. There is enthusiasm and a
sense of first, I witnessed that very moment , through my very own
eyes, I am the only one.
I am the only witness to this moment of pureness of nature.

I am a painter and all I can do is capture this happening and celebrate
it. It is my enjoyment of the place I want to share through my paintings,
I believe that the source of my interest lies in early childhood experiences.
In discovering nature and fantasizing about it using it as an escape from
the harsh realities of life. Sitting on the edge of a body of water, observing
the never ending movements on their way, on their own journey of life,
enough room for metaphors.

To capture and celebrate, giving meaning to that very place. All that I
picked up on in that very spot feeds into my painting. What I hear and
smell, my thoughts and the sounds of that very moment, my knowledge
of culture and history, the applied metaphors, the atmosphere. A quest
for giving meaning to my own life.

To convey a thought, a smell or sound in a painting is difficult to do and
hard to explain. I believe that the enjoyment in the act of painting and
the medium of paint itself makes it all possible. It is the energy and
freedom in your very own mark making, the randomness of paint splatters
and splattering. Putting one glob of paint next to another. It is about
knowing your ingredients like a great chef does, the knowledge of how
they will react when mixed up or put next to each other. Developing
something unique, something brand new, a new taste ... like that very
unique moment on the edge of water and land.

Nature, as a source of inspiration, is vast and never ending, the ongoing
capture and celebration of it in my art is my task.

Commission in Progress

Commission in Progress 60"x48"

It feels like forever since my last post! On these hot Summer days
the last thing I want to do with my cool mornings is sit at my computer.
The rest of the day Kirby has the computer for work. I have been
painting some, working on the commission and a 4' square abstract.
I have a smaller piece going but I think my resistance to small has reached
an all time high and the painting keeps getting worse.

Yesterday we had the best of Summer drama weather. It was 80 degrees
out and I noticed black clouds coming from the west so I sat down
outside and watched and sure enough the lightening and thunder started.
After a while the wind started and then the dust storm and then the hail
came pouring down and then the rain poured as hard as it ever does here.
Too hard for the gutters to handle. Then it all stopped and it was 60 degrees.
Sunday night we had one of the best sunsets I have ever witnessed.
Nature as you see has been creating some sensational art.

Susan's Day at the Beach

I have been on my Summer pace lately which is not creatively
very productive I am embarrassed to say. It is difficult to stay
in the studio on these warm sunny days, besides I am doing
quite a bit of thinking about where I want to go with these 2
large canvases staring at me. I do way too much of that. I also
have been transforming my other blog as I get ready to make
the next step in promoting my healing profession. Now that I
have given you all my excuses I have posted an older painting
that is oil and wax. The proportions are not right on the image
but I do not know how to fix that in Photoshop.

It is Cherry harvest time and the tractors are driving by with their
trailers filled with crates filled with cherries to deliver to the 'Cherry
House' where large trucks will pick them up and take them out in the
world. I love this time of year when there is so much activity and the
pickers are living in our small town.

WIP

I am trying something many artists do, and work on several paintings at once.
This is a challenge for me. When I was a kid I would attack Thanksgiving dinner
methodically and eat all of one thing before going to the next thing on my plate.
That about says it all. I like to finish something before starting something else.

So I am working on this 48x48 inch canvas alongside a 24x18 inch canvas and
my commission. I worked on this piece yesterday and am liking what is happening.
Now that makes things more difficult, as it makes what is happening on a very
unfinished painting precious and I am going to have to bust through that. The colors
are a little earthier than I usually do. I like that. There is a tempo, a movement that
I like. There, however, is a sureness and complexity that is missing so far. Any input
is welcome.

Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition 2010 hosted by the
Utah Watercolor Society and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West
Valley City, Utah.

"What meaning does doing art have for you?"

What a question! The answer is a bit elusive and for me has evolved over the
years, but the constant challenge of answering it in my mind is part of the
answer. I am rather introspective, so in line with that, I have this ongoing need
to understand why I am so compelled to make art. I have been painting, drawing
and looking at art for as long as I can remember. Often making art is frustrating,
but ultimately I find it rewarding. Art making is an inner calling; I was created in
the [spiritual] image of God and from that my purpose derives. If I don't do art,
I'm opposing the spirit within me and this creates a void. But I was born for this
purpose and I am driven by it and cannot deny it. I must make art. Thus far it
has been all about the process since I can never "sum it all up" in a single work,
or a multitude of works for that matter, and I don't have an end in sight. Does
any artist have an end in sight? All of us have heard at least one story of an artist,
weak and near death, yet still making art. My worst nightmare is becoming a
commercial success, painting daisies or doggies, or anything else repetitiously.
At my best I am in a trance; I am a medium spewing this abstract language of
marks and symbols from the deepest recesses of my soul, and maybe some from
the shallow recesses as well. All the art I have made from childhood to today has
taken me closer to a more profound answer to this question; I doubt it will ever
be fully answered. Art is my language and it has taken sixty years to impart the
communique in my work.

Underpinnings

No this is not a finished painting!~
I was having a conversation with an artist, Phil Brown via email about art
and he stated "One thing I am discovering- being reckless with marks and
splashes at the beginning "reveals new directions you never thought existed".
This inspired me to share my process on my commissioned piece. What I
have painted thus far on this 5 foot by 4 foot canvas is simply paint to respond
to. This is how I start my paintings, just apply paint. I am thinking there will be
a lot of dark values in the final painting so I kept the underpinnings fairly light
and bright. This will allow for more value control and interesting scratching.
Otherwise I just applied paint to keep with my motto "break the illusion of

At one time I showed my work at Roche Bobois in Portland, a high end
furniture store and sold tons of art. I have been wishing for another,
similar, situation with great people like the ones managing my art at
RB. The ex-manager called me and she works at another high end
furniture store in the Portland area and she wanted to represent my
art again. So we met and she took a painting I happened to have in
the back of my car. I am thrilled to be working with Jill again and to
be showing in a nice furniture store. I think people can really respond
to art when they see it in the context of living spaces.

The reason I had the painting in the back of the car in the first place
was to meet with Donna Guardino of Guardino Gallery to submit my
work for her 2011 calendar. Submissions are still open and I won't
know until the fall, but I am under consideration. I did an exhibit of
my drawings several years back at this gallery and would love to
show again. She was complementary of the work, which is always a
great thing to hear.

The other cool thing that went on while I was there was the phone
calls from Willow Galley in Walla Walla telling me I had sold 3 more
pieces of art. Rockin'!!

I am afraid that I don't have any new art to show for myself
and there probably won't be for the next week. I am going through
a million changes and am very busy. Wednesday I am going to
Portland until Sunday or Monday. Yesterday I went to Walla Walla
to replace a piece of art that sold. "The Green Room" is off to Seattle
or Palm Springs, the new owner had not yet decided.
Since only a few people were in the gallery while I was there I snapped some
pictures but they didn't turn out very interesting.

I am feeling very fortunate about this show having sold this piece and getting
the large commission. And, of course showing at this lovely venue!

Sometimes I think my visual cortex is tied more strongly than
usual to the pleasure centers in my brain. Looking - at rich color
combinations, warm low light on autumn afternoons or cool light
on late winter mornings, multiple reflections on glasses at the dinner
table, or layers of peeling paint on an old wall, makes me really
happy. The process of seeing enriches me. I can get stopped still
at odd moments, staring at a slice of light down a narrow alley
between buildings or the accidental juxtaposition of colors as strangers
pass each other on the street.

At the same time, I feel like I haven't really seen something until I've
drawn or painted it, so making art is a way of seeing better, and thus
making myself happier since the seeing itself jazzes me. I also feel the
pull of what the photographer Eldred Davis referred to as a 'visual call
and response' similar to some traditional dances and certain kinds of
jazz music. I see beauty and it thrums in me and I need to respond, my
response is the art-making process. It's my way of dancing with the
universe.

Of course I love it when other people like what I've made, but what
really pleases me is when I like it, and I have something new to look at,
thrumming and humming with the rhythms of the world.

I have been so negligent of my blogs lately. It has been a busy time for
me. I have started working on a screenplay with Kirby. Since it is my
story, I am having to lay the foundation. Needless to say I have not
been spending much time in the studio. When I do go to the studio I
have been getting nothing but frustration as the piece I am working on
is definitely not cooperating. I am going to have to start kicking into
creative gear soon as I now have a commission. A lovely couple from
Seattle, referred from the show in Walla Walla visited my studio this
weekend and told me what they wanted and it will be a large painting.
It is a bit ironic because I did a whole group of smaller paintings for the
show against my desire to paint large, and here the sale is a large painting.

Galleries and Dealing with Rejection

I have been having a discussion with Annell Livingston
about how to approach galleries. In the process she
asked me how I deal with rejections. I spent so much
time on the answer this morning that I thought I would
post it.

Annell: "Rejections." Certainly nothing new to artists.
How do you handle it?

Katherine: In 'On Writing' Stephen King said that he put
a 10 penny nail in his office and put his rejection notices
on the nail as he received them. The nail was full by the
time he sold Carrie, his first published novel. I think of
that. I do get a little bummed but then I pick myself up by
the bootstrap and remember that every no is one step
closer to the yes and the most successful people in the world
are the ones that have had the most nos and kept going. I
would like some responses. Mostly I hear nothing.

My partner is a screenplay writer who has not sold anything
but his follow up is remarkable and as a result he has several
production companies that will read anything he puts in front
of them. The head of the Academy of Motion Pictures gets
right back to him. While I have been selling tons of art he
has sold nothing but he just keeps getting more and more
confident. You think galleries are tough, try Hollywood! He
has been making these phone calls for over 10 years and has
a prestigious agent (the only way he can get read. His agent
does very little by the way. If he had not done the pursuing
he would be no where.) His attitude puts me to shame if I get
discouraged.

"What is the meaning of doing art for you?"

The "doing" is the "art". We see the finished work and
we think that is the "art". But the finished work is only
the visible by-product of the process. We go into the
studio and we begin the ritual, hopefully, with grace,
because everything shows.

And that is where I am and where I must stay. Each
morning as the sun rises above Taos Mountain you will
find me at work in the studio. It is a problem unsolved,
that turns into another problem unsolved and I must
continue. I am responsible to the process. It is my life, my
breath. Whatever happiness is, I could not be happy
without my work. It is what I do. It is what I am. It sustains
me in all weather, be it sunshine or shadow.

My favorite quote is Henry James, "We work in the dark,
We do what we can, We give what we have, The rest is the
madness of art."

The journey is unknown, winding, and full of danger, but the
rewards are great. And what else do we do in life, that we
sign our name to?

If I'm doing art it means I'm alive! I say that because
I really don't know what it feels like to be anything
other than an artist. Painting for me is not something
I do in the way, say, a hobbyist collects stamps. A
hobbyist can stop or change hobbies. That option is not
there for me: I have no choice but to make art. It's
what I am and what I do comes from that, sometimes
easily and sometimes not! I have to make images and
painting is the medium in which I choose to make them.

After a great pouring rain last night it is sunny today.
I love Spring! Ahchooooo! No really I do! Ahchoo!
The allergies are big here this year as we had an
unseasonably warm couple of days and the trees ran
to catch up pouring pollen into the air. My friends cat
came home thickly coated in yellow.

So anyhow, sniffle and paint, sniffle and blog, I do have
a new painting for you. A new nursery rhyme? What do
you think? "Vision Quest" was, in its last incarnation
"Hanuman". I had a great time reworking it, I actually
felt like an artist again.

"What is the meaning of doing art for you?"

For me, art is more a way of seeing than doing. It is a daily
attitude rather than a final solution, so I'm looking at and
working out a journey with colours, shapes, smells, lines,
tones, forms and feelings and how they relate and work
together all the time.

I'm not a gregarious or expressive person so painting is my
outlet and I'm often surprised at the colourful outcome and
other people's kind responses to it. I paint because I want to
and I enjoy the process and freedom of it. I'm not a tortured
artist - I live and work in beautiful and historical surroundings
which I hope comes through in my work. I get a huge thrill to
see the final piece, as I never know what the end result will be.
Of course not all results are good, but I revel in the challenge
to improve, and aspire to become a better artist.

As a result I have not been in the studio. Everyday
I tell myself I am going to go in and work, but I either

For me, making art is a way to communicate. It is better
than using words because for me the images carry deeper,
more personal meaning than words can convey. Colors and
shapes and marks all combine, like poetry or music to make
something that has both  meaning and beauty for me. When
a client responds to my art and makes a purchase, I know
I have reached a place inside them, that they can truly hear
my voice, not just my words. Making my art is a way of
putting a little bit of me into the world.

I have been writing a brochure so I have not been
painting. I do think I am finished with "The Grotto"

Pow Wow

Yesterday I went to a Pow Wow here in La Grande,
Oregon. As an artist I am a great believer in going
out to places where I feel my image bank in my
being will get restocked. I was not disappointed at
this event for it was not only a visual feast, the
drumming and chanting fed my soul on a very primal
level. I wish I was a better photographer, but here

It seems I am still getting ready for the show. It is
amazing how much it takes to get ready for even
the smallest of exhibits. Yesterday I cleaned up my
resume and reworked my artists statement and sent
them with my bio off to the gallery. Today I sign paintings.
In other words I have not been painting.

Todays post is a painting I did several years ago. I was
very pleased with how it turned out and knew it was sold
when I finished it. I took it to the gallery and in no time it
sold. Now what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Did the
painting sell because I knew it would? Or did I know it
would because I was well sort of psychic? Or maybe there
is an energy to the painting. :^} Actually this has happened
several times where I have finished a painting and known
this and it rapidly sold. The first time it happened I was able
to trade 2 paintings I felt this way about for the electrical in
my studio that I was building at the time. It included the
heater, industrial fan, and all the lights and bulbs. What a
coup!

Have a day filled with whimsy.

I go out for a short walk this morning to take some
pictures and I see this beautiful tree....typical Spring sight.
Then I turn around and ...what the heck?

Cinco de Mayo (yesterday) and it snowed like Winter all day.
One of the things they say about the weather here is 'If you
don't like the weather wait 10 minutes'...TOO TRUE!

"What is the meaning of doing art for you?"

As long as I can remember I have drawn or painted.
I need  to express myself. All of my deepest emotions,
even the dark ones, find a place on my canvases and
paper. I am the happiest when drawing and painting,
as I create magical places where my personality can be
totally true, without any restraint. I can rearrange pain
and sorrow into beauty. Sometimes a harsh beauty
perhaps, but there's always hope in my work. I can totally
loose myself while painting. Two friends of mine (who
shared an atelier with me) made fun of me, because,
being absorbed in my own world, I don't see or hear a
thing, and am not aware of what's going on around me.
In my art, I express my emotions, but there are also other
deeper layers. I often use symbolic meanings and archetypes,
connections with nature, old forgotten god(ess)s, and
mythology. I like the idea of intermingling old icons with
the icons of today. I don't think this over for a long time,
it simply appears while creating.

The happiness while creating also contains struggles and
frustration. I struggle mostly while painting. It seems that
drawing feels more natural for me. I begin a drawing and go
with the flow, my thoughts leading my hand and slowly there
appears an image. I never feel insecure about a drawing but
I'm always questioning myself while painting. I have to learn
to let go more. To paint is to struggle, but at the end it is always
satisfying and freeing. Even if the result isn't what I expected.
When my kids were little I didn't have the time, space and
patience for painting. That's why I started to draw little drawings.
I'm doing this still today. There's always time and space for a
drawing.  But after some years I began to feel very restless and
had to paint. As I now have the time I have started painting
again (slowly).

I transform my personal emotions into more universal images,
hoping people will recognize what I want to say and find
(some) comfort in it. As I wrote in the beginning; I simply
need to draw and paint, it's like breathing for me.

/I feel like a lost soul  ~  i go to sleep and dream again  ~
Silent echoes, strange shapes  ~ i have my own world....... /

Brazil Installation

I would be remiss if I did not post this on my blog.
I found this on Flickr and keep going back like a
dry sponge trying to fill with moisture. I know next
to nothing about this. A group of artists in Brazil
did this painting installation, painting the floors and
walls of this exhibition space. Then there was an
exhibition of it. There are tons of pictures.
Here and here And if you go looking you will find
many more.

I hope you enjoy. In February of 2009 I started
this blog wondering if I would get one person to
read it. I felt a little doubtful. So I went and checked
my stats today for whole time it has been up. Thus
far I have had 11,245 visits from 5,223 visitors.
The average amount of time they have spent reading
has been 2:21. They visit from 87 different countries.
So the next time you consider putting your self out in
the world via blog I would encourage it. :^}

Walkin' Bear

I have been working outside today and my ankle
wants a rest so I thought I would sit down and do
tomorrow's post today. Saturday I went to the
studio and finished reworking The Grotto, I think.
Never know with me. Then I picked up a painting
that was no where near being a painting and started
putting tinted whites on it, not really thinking about
what I was doing. I just kept at it. By the time I was
done I had easily created a piece that I was excited
about, an abstract/figurative piece. The angel was
definitely with me. I have worked for as long as I
have been an artist to create this kind of piece and
it just flowed out of me. Dare I think it could happen
again?

"Chasing Stars" is the 10 foot painting I painted before

when I was drawing during the period I was studying
at the Drawing Studio. I knew I was in for it the
first time I called to ask when classes were starting
and Phil said the first class of this season is in session
right now. Hurry and come down. I said but I am still
in my pajamas. He replied we don't care if you wear
your pajamas, just come. I started the next class. If
I had known the way things were there I might have
gone in my pj's, it would have only added to the fun.

Today I will be brief as I have an appointment this
morning and I slept late. Last night I downloaded
so more of my drawings. It was great fun, bringing
back many memories.

Todays drawing was done fro a model and I am
afraid I have cheated. This drawing has been cropped.
It is a huge relief for me as it went from being a
failure to being (in my eyes) a success. Her right knee
and leg were wrong and I did not see that it could be
remedied until I took it into photoshop. So any how
here it is.

I am on a roll, dusting off the images of my drawings.
It has been really fun cleaning up and labeling the digital
files.

Today's drawing hangs in my studio. For reasons I am not
clear about it is my favorite of the drawings I still have. I
never tire of it. This is another drawing that I did at
The Drawing Studio with a live model.

Hopefully I will make it into the studio today and throw
some paint at a canvas. It is always hard for me to re-enter
the creative process after reaching a deadline.

J.B. Krost responded to my drawing yesterday by asking
if I had been hiding my charcoals. Funny, but I realized
since I had moved to Eastern Oregon I had not been
working from models. Thus there were no new drawings
coming forth. Well except animals from photos. There
is something so spontaneous and lovely working from a
model. Cindy Bilotti and I paid models to come to my
studio and regularly worked from these lovely people, and
we did have incredible people come sit and stand for us.
Todays drawing is one such person, a very talented artist
herself.

I have been so busy lately doing all the things I put off
getting this last batch of paintings ready that I have had
no time for the studio. But there is still plenty of art of
mine I have not posted.

I did this drawing while I was still in Portland and it is a
study of a drawing of Aristide Maillol, a French artist
mostly known for his sumptuous sculptures. I love doing
studies of others drawings as I learn so much.

I did no art this weekend. Had a lovely visit with Colleen
Sargen, curator of the Willow Gallery in Walla Walla and
talented artist. We met in town and on the way to my studio
we saw a herd of 8 Prong Horn Antelope. Awesome!
We stopped and got out of the car to get a closer look
and they were so curious they came toward us. I found out
this weekend that they go an entire lifetime without drinking
water, they get enough moisture from the plants they eat,
which includes desert sage.

I was looking through my pictures of art to see what I
had not posted on my blog. I found this drawing I did
9 years ago from a photo of Alfred Stieglitz's of
Georgia O'Keefe. It sold somewhere along the line.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend, aside from a torrential
downpour including winds and lightening and thunder, we had
a beautiful sunny weekend.

I spent yesterday working on The Grotto and then went
and had a spectacular bodywork session. So far the
painting has gone down hill but that is often the case.
I have to mess it up before I get it better. It is all
about risk taking. Sabotage the work to hopefully
make it better, more interesting.

Today I am posting a drawing I have posted before.
I have recently brought the price down on it to $250.
It was $395 I believe.

Well, of course, after sending yesterday's painting out
into the blogosphere I went back into it with thinner.
I pulled color off it because I decided it was too dark.
So that is my task if I make it to the studio today.
I am getting a bodywork session today so it may be a
day off. Good way to spend tax day don't you think?

This is a drawing I did while studying at the Drawing
Studio in Portland. I have been itching to draw lately,
so maybe that is what I will do next time I sit down
to create.

I had a pretty good day in the studio. It's funny how
much of a struggle it is for me to create, but I do seem
to succeed ...at creating that is. Most of the time, I don't
really, honestly know how good I am at it. I am not
being falsely modest. I just feel like I am my own worst
judge. Not always, sometimes I hit it, and I know I have
hit it. But then again not everyone agrees with me even
then. I guess it all boils down to art is subjective. I am
always open to feedback so if any of you want to give
me an opinion feel free.

This painting is a repaint of an older painting. I love
doing that, making an old painting new.

Today I am posting an older painting that I have already
posted. I just can't believe it hasn't sold. It is large, so it
is expensive, but it is the last of many textured pieces I
painted. The only reason I still have it is that it was my
favorite and I kept it in my collection for years. It is one
of two paintings in my home that when people visit they
go to immediately and stand in front of it. I am talking about
people that don't get abstract. They love it. I don't know
maybe I am supposed to keep it?

I have been working at developing a strong internet presence
for the last few years so my art can be found. I discovered
through a friend of mine this weekend that when you put
Katherine T into the search engine and pause a second, my
name is one of about eight choices that drop down to
choose from. At Tre it comes right up. I was amazed!
It doesn't feel so long ago that I was trying to figure out
how to have my website be one of the first things that would
come up on my page in the search engines. Alright I am
bragging, but I am pleased.

I discovered yesterday that the stretcher bar
on this painting has a very slight warp

Well the angel showed up yesterday and I was able to
get a lot done in the studio. For this I am grateful, for
the wonderful curator of the gallery I will be showing
in is coming tomorrow. I feel ready now and yesterday
I didn't.

Today's painting is named after My experience of riding
the 'Green Room' a white water rapid in the Snake River.
It is the largest standing wave in the Snake and I believe
in this country. It was one of the most exhilarating
experiences in my long life. The only other one I am
remembering at the moment that matches it was flying
and landing an adult Golden Eagle off a leather gauntlet
when I was working with a project at the San Francisco
Zoo to retrain Birds of Prey for release. We had different
birds come stay with us when they were not feeling well,
including Thor, a Red Tailed Hawk and Harry, a Great
Horned Owl. Harry had the annoying habit of sitting on
one's knee and biting the corners of whatever book you
were reading. What a bird! Beautiful!!

The painting I am sending today may or may not be
finished. As, I believe, I have mentioned before, I
often paint something, think it is a breakthrough
only to realize later it is not even finished let alone
a breakthrough. This is one of those paintings. It
went through some veryawkward stages where
I was completely lost.If you want to tell me I might
have lost it on this one feel free.

Now as for the title. I see a little bear and a hill in
it. It reminded me of a rafting trip I took the
summer before last on the Snake River.Ohhhhh
what a Divine experience! Anyhow in the first
few moments we were in the river a baby bear
came scurrying down the very steep hill, a wall
of Hell's Canyon. He went to the river, stuck his
paw in and to our utter amazement pulled a
large fish out. He put it in his mouth and scurried
back up. No hesitation! Wow! Beautiful.

April Fools

Out my front window.

Is April Fools a tradition in Europe? If so how is
it celebrated? We in the US do tricks on people
that are supposed to make them laugh and one
or the other of those involved ends up looking
the fool.

Here in Cove the trick is on us. Just when we
thought we were fully swinging into Spring the
Weather system started coming from the other
direction, the one it usually comes from all
Winter...Alaska. This Winter it came from
Hawaii.

I have spent a great amount of time on the computer
in the last few days. Putting a new blog up took some time
what with all the fine tuning, which I am sure will continue,
and all the networking. I must have sent out 60 emails
yesterday. I think it will be a good thing though. Heck
I already have 3 followers. Woo hoo! This week my
art blog passed the 100 mark and now has 102 followers.
This is not including those of you that get my daily email.

I am working on another 24x18 painting for the show and
have reached a precious stage too early. I am going to
have to be brave when facing it and be radical with it.

I believe it is a full moon today, so get your
howling clothes on. I am hoping to howl at a canvas.
I worked on another 24x18 this weekend but it needs
to dry a bit before I can work it anymore. Too bad, it
is an energetic piece, perfect for howling. Today's
piece is another small one and I am hoping it is a
significator (did I make this word up?) that there is
a reason to be dockside, maybe there is a ship coming
in.......and it's mine?

I am happy to have finished another painting today.
It is interesting to me that I have a show coming up
on place and I received this grant to reflect the
power of this area where I live in my art work, and
the last two pieces, with no conscious effort on my
part remind me of places locally. Today's painting, for
whatever reason reminds me of Jubilee Lake. But,
not only places, people in my life. 'Crossing the Blues'
reminds me of my friend Tara, who turned 26 on
Tuesday. That means she was born in 1984. To me
1984 is a futuristic novel. That goes to show the
difference in our age. We are kindred spirits in
agelessness .

I know, I am rambling. Today's painting reminds me
of Melissa, who is now basking in the warmth of the
desert, hanging with her 93 year old dad and her sisters.

Crossing the Blues

I am finally calling this painting finished. I often start
a painting by cleaning my palette and putting the
remaining paint on the canvas of the new painting.
Then I create the painting responding to the paint that
has haphazardly been laid down. This time the paint
was particularly psychedelic and I loved it's intensity.
Now you might think this is a good place to start.
Actually what happened was I had too much on the
canvas that was already precious to me. What was
I going to destroy in order to make a painting that
worked? 'Precious' can be the enemy to creativity.
When I was working with Cindy collaboratively I
would say "ohhhh I love this part of the painting,
I love what is happening here." She would inevitably
paint over the part I had pointed to. I was wishing
I had Cindy there when I was working on this painting,
so I called on the Cindy in my self and attacked much
of the 'precious' (doesn't this bring to mind The Lord
of the Rings? "My little precious!).

I live close to the Oregon Trail in a valley at the Base
of the Blue Mountains. Crossing the Blues was the last
huge challenge for those traveling the Oregon Trail.
Some people died trying to cross these mountains.
Now it takes 45 minutes on the freeway. The title is
of course a triple entendre. And, yes, I had to pass
through the emotional blues to create this painting.

It was so great yesterday to get back into the
Art and Meaning project. I am hoping it inspires
others to get involved. I have quite a few requests
to artists out there.

I had one of "those" days yesterday where nothing
happened in the studio but paint getting used. On
that note I will quote Philip Guston:

"I go to my studio every day, because I may go and
the angel will there. What if I don't go and the angel
came?"

I went, but she did not show up. I know wherever
she went that artist had an incredible day and soon
it will be my turn again.

"What is the meaning of doing art for you?"
It's hard to say, only that it is..... meaningful,
painful, liberating,and very personal. I have
a studio (vacant bedroom) in the corner
of my house. At times I find myself actually
avoiding the area, and I wont go in there at
all (I don't know why). When I push myself in
there, its really hard to get me out. I'm not really
sure what draws me in there, all I know is that
there is a peaceful feeling, or one of purpose
that slowly builds within me that is hard to find
something to compare to.

I have only been in a handful of shows and only
actually sold one painting. I don't think I paint
for the glory or notoriety or I'm sure I would
apply for more shows and more galleries, I feel
that I do it, more, for my own satisfaction , to
give me a moment's peace and solitude in order
to explore my mind and the possibilities to see
what comes out on the canvas. I am an avid fly
fisherman and have the same sensation when
I'm out there doing that .

This is a great world, but there is a lot wrong
with it. Art is like being in the eye of the storm,
its peaceful and is calm,but at the edges there
is a lot of violent swirling and debris. Sometimes
you need to find a refuge.

As I sit here thinking what can I write today (I didn't blog
yesterday as I didn't come up with anything to say) I
realize I am a little discombobulated as an artist. I love
to paint large. I am craving a huge canvas and I am
painting small for the show in June and to sell now.
I painted yesterday on a 24x18 canvas a painting that is
about as big as you could fit on a canvas that size. I mean
bold. It's not finished. When it is I'll post it. Maybe I need to
have a large canvas going on the side. Oh well that's
enough rambling for now.

I am on my way to the bank with a check as result
of an art grant for art supplies! I am so excited, I have
never received a grant before this. I spent all yesterday
working up an order as the 17th is the last day of a sale
at Daniel Smiths. Like a little kid in a candy shop!

I spent this weekend going back and forth between

For now I am calling this painting finished. It
has felt like a process of birthing. It is, in the end,
a dark painting. It does not surprise me as I
emerge from the darkness of the past 6 months
that my first real effort would turn out so dark.
My friend says it is not dark but rich and I would
describe this time I have been through as rich also.

I am reworking the painting I had name The Witness and
I thought I would share it with you. It is not finished. I need
to get more value contrast going as it is now really dark.
I like it better though. I know some people liked it as it
was, but I kept looking at it with discomfort.

It's cold here this morning, 25 degrees and spitting snow.
It would be nice if it would stop fooling around and give
us one good snowfall before Spring hits. I am not
complaining I have loved the non Winter and it has been
perfect for for someone who can not slip and fall. No
ice is a good thing in my reality.

I have posted two new ebay auctions this morning
after the last one completed.

I struggled with the image of 'Claret' in photoshop
trying to get the red as true as it is, but I only
succeeded in making the image a bit dark, at least
it isn't as red orange as before I started.

It is Spring like here this week with crocuses in
bloom, the Tulips and daffodils coming up and
buds showing on trees and bushes. What an odd
Winter it has been! But I am not complaining, I
could be in Florida or Texas, where it has been
unusually cold.

The Witness

I am calling this painting done, but we'll see. Often I
stare at a painting long enough and I see what needs
to be changed/added. This was a fun piece, bringing
together the figurative and the abstract. I loved
working this way. I tried to make a Raven out of it,
but it insisted on being a Crow. Same family, Crows,
Ravens, Blue Jays, Magpies, right? My mother was
a big bird watcher. She said the Jay family was the
smartest as they used objects as tools. I guess no other
birds do that.

So I just opened the dictionary of bird totems and it
says in the first sentences "My grandfather told me
that the crow was the smartest of all the birds. What's
more, it even knew it was the smartest of birds and
enjoyed it to the fullest. In fact, it was so smart that it
chose to stay a crow, rather than move on to some other
area of evolution". There you go. As far as the totem it
says "Wherever crows are, there is magic. They are
symbols of creation and spiritual strength. They remind
us to look for opportunities to create and manifest the
magic of life. They are messengers calling to us about the
creation and magic that is alive within our world everyday
and available to us."
I like that and I'll leave you to it.

Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area I am
quite familiar with earthquakes. I was there when the Loma
Prieta earthquake happened, collapsing part of the Bay Bridge,
a freeway in the East Bay and setting fire to buildings in
the Marina District.

That was a 7.1 earthquake. I can not even begin to imagine
an 8.8, seismic measurement is exponential. I don't know
what else I want to say, other than my mind is boggled at the
size of this quake. And of course that I have total compassion
for the Chileans. My prayers are with them.

The last few days my creativity went on strike. I had to
work on a figurative piece to get it back. Then after spending
two days with that piece I was able to get back to my small
abstracts. I may have started something new, where there isn't
such a fight going on inside of me of what I am here to create.
I was starting to feel a little stuck with the figurative piece after
working it for two days but working the abstract seems to
have loosened that a bit. Back and forth, this will keep me
entertained!

took it off, scraped, scratched....and finally gave up.
Momma said there'd be days like this. But at least
I have a new painting to post today and a week end
to get one going for Monday's post.

I don't usually put my new pieces up for auction
but I thought I'd give it a try. See what happens.

Wow, I am back again today. It is wonderful
communicating with my blog friends again.
I started out a little clumsy, titling the painting
a name I had already used (Spring Moon). So
yesterday's painting is now 'Primavera'.

It is glorious to be painting again and it is just
pouring out, like a pot boiling over. Glad to see
I still have it. Yes, I was worried there for a
moment. Todays posting was different for me
in color and tone and made me want to paint
large, but in this style. We shall see, one step at
a time. Right now I need to build a body of medium
to smaller work as I have a show in June at the
lovely Willow Gallery in Walla Walla, Washington.

I can't pretend to call this a daily but I am back at it in
the studio. After 2 false starts trying to do something
completely different and being extremely frustrated,
my friend Cindy shared with me a dream in which
she was told that just because the train had stopped she
didn't need to switch trains, just wait until the train is
repaired and it will get going again. That was a profound
message for me, as I have often jumped trains and lost
what I had built. Well the train is moving again and I
am changed by the repairs in ways I am not all together
conscious of.

Yesterday I went for a walk for .6 mile up hill and down
hill. It was a large breakthrough for me. Amazing how
large things that were once given are now. Being upright
and walking is a fantastic thing!

Since I haven't been able to find my way back into
the studio I am doing what I do when I know
the alchemical cauldron is busy cooking up the new.
I am clearing out the old. These paintings are the
way I used to work, very textural and atmospheric.
I decided to send pictures to my list of collectors,
many of them owners of this sort of work and offer them
for 1/2 the price I had them listed at. To my surprise and
joy they all sold within 12 hours. Today I will be packing
them up. It feels wonderful to send them on there way.
I will only have one piece left from that period, my favorite,
one I don't care if I ever sell.

I have gone through my house getting rid of things
that I don't need or are no longer precious (not
including these paintings). I am feeling lighter
all the time. I have always loved this process,
clearing and making way for the new.

One thing about being global is you can't assume
everyone that is reading your blog celebrates the
same holidays or even solstices as you do. For those
of you that have been celebrating I hope it has been
good. I celebrated both the Winter Solstice and
Christmas, which to me in some ways are about the
same thing, the birth of light. I had a good time. This
year, more than any other time in my life, the
celebration has been about giving the gift of love.
These past 4 months have been profound for me,
as I heal from surgery on my ankle. I have so much
appreciation for those who have helped me through it.

I still have not re-entered the studio, as I am still very
tenuous with my ankle. Needless to say, this whole event
has been a challenge to my pocket book (did I really say
pocket book?) so I have decided to do an end of the year
auction of 5 of my small paintings.

I wish a very happy 2010 to all of you. The start of a new
decade, wow! May it be new! If you haven't seen the movie
Avatar I highly recommend it.

Small room.

It feels good to sit in front of the computer again with
the intention of going back to work on the blog. I have
missed all of you. I am going to try to get into the studio
this week and do something as I am getting unbearably
grouchy. Then I will have something to post.

I had my show opening Thursday at Satellite Gallery
with Frank Janzen, master printmaker at Crow's Shadow'.
It was a treat spending time with him and his wife Marie.
The show is a beauty, if I dare say so myself. Our work
complemented each others very well. His art in the show
was lovely colorful fused glass sculptures. The turn
out was fair. For those of you who do not live in the area
I share these pictures so you too can attend the show.

My thanks to Don Gray for orchestrating the placement
of my paintings. Thank you also to Don, Melissa Over,
and Stephanie Messersmith for hanging my part of the show.

This weekend is open studios in the Grande Ronde.
Artists studios open all over the valley for people meet the
artists, view and maybe even purchase some art. We
artists always hope so. In my neck of the woods Tom
Diamond will be doing glass blowing demonstrations,
Don Gray will be available to chat with in his magnificent
studio, and I will be at my studio with my foot up, a
completely captive audience. So if you live locally
please come by. 10-5 on Saturday and 1-5 on on Sunday.

Now...where was I? No, really, I am already tired of
this story. So briefly the rescue team showed up, pumped
me full of pain meds, put me on the back of a ATV flatbed
and away we went, getting stuck on only one berm. I
was put in the ambulance and we bumped our way down
the wash boarded dirt road. Do not think for one moment
that the pain was stopped by the meds. I was a screamer
but not a whiner that day.

The situation did not rapidly change at the hospital. There
was the wait and then the process of figuring out how to
deal with a badly fractured and dislocated ankle with no
specialist on board. After seeing the xrays Kirby came in
and said "Honey, your skateboard is really busted!" About
2 hours into it I was put under and the ankle was put back
in place.

At this point I went home. Tuesday I saw the specialist and
Wednesday I had surgery. All this time I was on drugs and
my sleeping reality was becoming just as real as my waking.
The reality was vivid and yummy, a combination of Peter
Max, Salvador Dali, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I am off the drugs and on the mend and extremely grateful
for Kirby, my community and the excellent medical attention
I received out here in remote Eastern OR.

Okay,......so a week ago last Sunday I suggested to
my partner that he and I go for a walk....an innocent
enough desire. So we loaded the dogs into the car and
headed up toward the entrance to the wilderness area
outside of our town. We had gone about 3 or 4 miles
up a dirt road when we saw an old forestry road that is
now blocked by dirt berms. We decided to try that road,
as we never had, instead of continuing up to our original
destination.

It was a lovely road, as far as the views, with expansive
vistas of the valley and the craggy side of the top of the
mountain. The road itself was a drag because we had to
walk over many berms of loose dirt. They really wanted
to keep out any kind of motor vehicles. Kirby kept walking
ahead of me, the dogs with him and I found myself irritated.
What if a cougar appeared (there are many) or I fell? And
talk about instant manifestation....kaboom I fell coming down
the steep side of a berm. Aren't I powerful? I caught the side
of my foot and slipped sideways, dislocating my ankle. That
much I knew immediately as I lay screaming on the ground
I looked down and saw that my foot was not on the ankle
and both were headed in separate directions. If I had not
already been screaming with pain I would have started then.
Kirby was not very far ahead so he was with me immediately
saw my ankle and called on the cell 911,Thank you God we
were in easy cell phone range!

As I lay in a bed of rock I had two thoughts. It was going to
take some time for the rescue people to get here, and, that if
I spent all that time focused on the pain I was going to be very
miserable. I then said God this would be a REALLY good time
for miracle. That being said I started to pay attention to my
breath as opposed to the pain and was actually somewhat
peaceful for the approximate 40 minutes it took for the team
to get there. I did think how the heck are they going to get me
back with all those berms?
